For those unaware, Redcar Squash is trying to pursue the addition of 2 further squash courts. The initial design has been reconfigured following discussions with the planners. In brief the plan is currently to have the two new courts extending from the gym. The design has gallery viewing behind both and then new changing rooms beyond them. The entry to the new squash area will be via a glass frontage spanning the ground and first floor. The first floor area would comprise a social area as a cafe and have viewing onto the courts. It could also be used as a second function room. There would also be an extension to the carpark. The toal cost of the scheme is £243k.
In order to fund this we have been pursuing £100k via the Sustainability Fund (managed by Sport England to relife facilities put down around the 1980s). We have also put a bid in for the Rural Fund (again managed by Sport England and targetted at developing the life or rural areas for which Redcar is classified (?)). Both these bids have been cold form bids and in mid September both were rejected. Both funds were 15 times oversubscribed but to lose both was disappointing following support given by Redcar & Cleveland Council plus Tees Valley Sport.
The other fund we are pursuing is via England Squash. They have £4million available over 4 years with £300k available for next year. There have been £9.2million worth of bids for this, covering 140 clubs. We have asked for £115k which puts us in the large capital category alongside 40 other bids. Of the 40, 24 have been asked to present to England Squash and 21 have agreed to do so. Whilst it is gratifying to get into this top half of bids, with only £300k available for next year and each large category bid being over £100k, of the 21 bids, only 2 or 3 clubs in this category will be supported.
The presentation was made to England Squash on 24th September 2009 to a panel comprising 5 people. It was pleasing to see how much they knew about Redcar Squash and they were clearly impressed by the good things the club is doing. We were given an hour and a half of presentation and debate and the process could not have given us a fairer chance to clarify what we and what the bid are about.
England Squash have 3 weeks of similar presentations to listen to now and will notify us of their decision in November.
Well folks here we are, another year. Thanks to everybody for entering or deleting your names as required from the notice. I wish you all well and a injury free season. Hope you enjoy and good luck to all.

Welcome indeed all and a busy preseason it’s turning into but for the moment we’re just trying to master inputting things. You might appreciate this is a work in progress – all ideas gratefully received
The local schools coordinators based at Rye Hills recently ran a taster day for 10 different sports at Eston Academy and Redcar were asked to provide coaches to have allow squash to be included. Despite the venue not being ideal for squash – indoor astro turf football pitch – and groups of kids up to 40 per session, the day progressed very well. before each session we chatted about the knowledge of squash. Virtually none of the kids had ever played squash before and much less than half had ever heard of it. Despite this, everyone enjoyed the sessions and many ranked it as their favourite activity. Interesting that two of the groups said their favourite so far had been football before the squash began and this despite the fact that neither group had actually played football. This gives some indication of the competition squash faces in getting juniors involved.
In total 350 kids around 8/9 years old participated in the squash sessions during the day and there was not one we didn’t enjoy the time with. Their enthusiasm was totally absorbing and a credit to their schools. All credit too for teh school sports coordinators who put this on.
